Mutare AI-Powered Grain Silos Near Completion Ahead of Presidential Commissioning

The construction of the Mutare artificial intelligence-powered Grain Marketing Board silos is 98% complete, with commissioning by President Emmerson Mnangagwa scheduled for October 29. Officials describe the facility as a major milestone in modernising Zimbabwe’s grain storage and food security systems.

Agriculture Minister Dr. Anxious Masuka, during a site tour, said only paving and final system tests remain before the official opening. He added, “These smart silos will transform grain management through enhanced monitoring, efficiency, and quality control.”

The Mutare facility is part of a national programme to install AI-driven smart silos at 14 sites across the country within two years. The initiative aims to reduce grain spoilage, strengthen storage infrastructure, and boost agricultural resilience.

Economist Professor Gift Mugano hailed the development, noting that Zimbabwe currently loses about 30% of its grain annually due to post-harvest losses. He said, “This is good news. Reducing losses of around 30% is significant — roughly US$194.4 million annually if the country produces 1.8 million metric tonnes of maize.”

Prof Mugano emphasised the need for continued investment in modern storage infrastructure. “These staggering losses justify accelerated investment in silos across maize-producing areas. If resources permit, let us build more silos.” He also encouraged the ministry to explore innovative financing models, including public-private partnerships, to expand the silo network.

Once commissioned, the Mutare project is expected to serve as a model for other planned facilities in Mhangura, Mvurwi, and other districts. The initiative will strengthen Zimbabwe’s grain management systems and support the country’s long-term goal of achieving food self-sufficiency.
