Wevhu: The Rising Voice Redefining Zimbabwe’s Afro-Fusion Sound

Better known by his stage name Wevhu, Strive Machona Masiwa is carving a distinct space in Zimbabwe’s growing music scene. With a sound rooted in African tradition and modern expression, he is quickly emerging as one of the country’s most promising Afro-fusion artists.

From a young age, Wevhu felt a deep connection to music. He recalls listening to Afro-jazz and local rhythms his grandparents played, sounds that later shaped his writing and performing style. “It was more than passion, it was my purpose,” he says, reflecting on his early journey performing in small spaces and releasing his first songs independently.

Wevhu credits his inspiration to musical icons like Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, Hugh Masekela, and Salif Keita. “Their storytelling, humility, and originality inspire me to stay true to who I am through my music,” he says. Like his mentors, he focuses on authentic narratives that reflect life, love, and the beauty of human experience.

His music draws heavily from real-life situations and African cultural identity. Each song explores emotion and truth, often built from a simple melody or guitar riff. “Sometimes it’s a melody that hits me randomly or a guitar riff I play during quiet moments. From there, I build lyrics around emotion — something that connects with people’s hearts,” he explains.

One of his most personal works is a collection that blends Afro-jazz and fusion, telling his story through sound. “Every song feels like a piece of me shared with the world,” he says.

Wevhu admits that creativity is not always easy to sustain. When facing creative blocks, he takes time off to recharge. “I take a step back. Sometimes you need to leave a little to create again. I listen to different artistes, spend time in nature, or just play my guitar until inspiration returns naturally,” he shares.

His motivation comes from purpose and gratitude. “Even when things get hard, I look at how far I’ve come and the people who believe in my music,” he says.

On handling criticism, Wevhu remains grounded. “I take it as part of growth,” he explains, urging upcoming artists to stay authentic. “Stay true to your sound and message. Don’t rush the process. Grow, learn, and keep your passion alive. The right people will feel your music when it’s real.”

Looking ahead, Wevhu is working on new music and visuals that explore themes of love, identity, and hope. He aims to collaborate with artists who share his vision and dreams of performing on global stages while representing Zimbabwe’s cultural richness.
