Herentals Primary Schools Kick Off Historic Soccer Tournament in Bulawayo

A vibrant atmosphere has gripped Bulawayo as a thrilling inter-school primary soccer tournament unfolds, bringing together four schools under the Herentals Group of Schools. The participating institutions — Herentals Nkulumane, Luveve, Cowdray Park, and Gwanda — are showcasing their footballing prowess in a spirited competition designed to uncover the next generation of sports stars.

The tournament, held at the Herentals Nkulumane Primary School grounds, features three age categories: Under 9, Under 11, and Under 13. Boys and girls from the four schools are competing fiercely, making it a truly inclusive and dynamic event.

Speaking on the significance of the tournament, Mr. Bhekisani Ndlovu, Head of Herentals Nkulumane Primary School, described the event as a historic moment for Bulawayo and a key milestone in Herentals’ mission to decentralise sports development.

“This provincial tournament is the first of its kind in Bulawayo. The ultimate goal is to send the winning teams to Harare for a national-level competition,” Mr. Ndlovu revealed. “The tournament seeks to unleash potential in local talent. In all corners of our country today, at Herentals Group of Schools, decentralised zonal games are taking place. Over 11,000 learners are kicking the ball in the 84 schools that we have.”

He added, “It is a special moment we are at. As the host centre, we are saying let us enjoy the day, cheer our learners, have fun, and identify talent.”

The tournament has not only brought excitement to the participating schools but also ignited a sense of pride among learners, teachers, and parents. With the emphasis on nurturing young talent, this initiative aligns with Herentals’ broader vision of using sports as a vehicle for empowerment and holistic education.

Spectators are witnessing not just raw talent but also the values of teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. As matches continue throughout the week, the energy remains high, and anticipation builds for the finals — and the opportunity for Bulawayo’s finest young players to represent their province in the capital.

For the Herentals Group of Schools, this tournament is more than just a series of matches; it’s the beginning of a legacy that could shape the future of Zimbabwean football, starting from the grassroots.
