Kirsty Coventry qualifies for 200m backstroke semi-final

Zimbabwe swimming legend Kirsty Coventry is through to the 200m backstroke semi-finals after registering a qualifying time of 2.10.38 at the FINA world swimming championships underway in Kazan Russia.

After missing out on a place in the 100m backstroke final on Monday, Coventry will get another crack at making a final at the FINA world swimming championships when she features in the 200m backstroke semi-final.

Swimming in heat 5 and lane 7 Coventry registered a time of 2.10.38 seconds. Coventry’s performance was enough to ensure qualification at the Rio 2016 games. In Brazil Coventry is guaranteed of participation in two events after also registering a qualifying time in the 100m backstroke on Monday.

Zimbabwe’s top swimmer will now be eagerly waiting for the 200m backstroke semi’s which are slated for 4:40pm on Friday. In a comment made by Coventry on twitter the two time Olympic gold medalist said, “Qualified for Rio Olympics in 200m Backstroke!”.
