Renowned Zimbabwean filmmaker Edmore Ndlovu has announced the national premiere of his highly anticipated film, Nyanga, which will also expand to regional audiences. This development presents an exciting opportunity for cinema lovers across Africa to experience the captivating storytelling and exceptional talent of Zimbabwean filmmakers.

The film features an impressive cast, including Benhildah Kandawasvika as Maseko, Hardlife Makuku as Bad Man, Lloyd Mazengula as Mapepa, Annie Gwasira as Noma, and Peter Chester as JD. Ndlovu, who served as the writer, director, and co-producer, collaborated closely with his wife, Talent Chitauro, the film’s main producer. Co-director Jakov Dakovis added his creative expertise, ensuring a collaborative effort in bringing Nyanga to life.

Speaking about the film’s regional debut, Ndlovu stated, “I am in talks with various countries, including Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Zambia, Mozambique, and Tanzania for the screening.”

Red Carpet Premiere

The national premiere is set for Thursday, December 19, at Ster Kinekor Joina City in Harare. Hosted by actor and television presenter Zolile Makeleni, also known as Tsotsi, the red-carpet event promises to be a star-studded affair. It marks Nyanga’s first screening in Zimbabwe after its debut at the Sotambe Zambia International Film Festival earlier this year.

“This event is expected to attract renowned filmmakers, actors, designers, and celebrities,” said Ndlovu, emphasizing its significance for the local film industry.

The Story Behind Nyanga

Filmed over 20 days at stunning locations such as Nyanga National Game Park, Lake Mutirikwi, Haka Game Park, and Hwedza, Nyanga offers a visually rich narrative. The story revolves around Panganayi, a ranger devoted to protecting rhinos in Nyanga National Park.

Nyanga tells the story of Panganayi, who faces the heart-wrenching loss of his wife while raising his children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Amidst personal struggles, he remains dedicated to safeguarding the rhinos from poachers,” explained Ndlovu.

The film explores themes of courage, resilience, and human endurance, providing a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by conservationists and the importance of protecting wildlife.

A Milestone Year for Ndlovu

Reflecting on his journey, Ndlovu highlighted the success of 2024 as a transformative year. “Producing Nyanga has been a labor of love, and winning the Outstanding Television Production Award at the ZAFTAS for the Bundu TV series has been a career highlight.”

He also acknowledged challenges in the production of Wenera, a popular soap opera, stating, “We are working closely with the parent broadcaster to resolve the issues. The return of Wenera is essential for us and the nation.”

Ndlovu remains optimistic about the future, adding, “If you can dream it, you can achieve it. It’s about making the most of the resources available.”

With Nyanga poised for national and regional success, Ndlovu is setting his sights on 2025. Several film and television projects are in the pipeline, promising to bring more compelling stories to audiences across the continent.

As the curtain rises on Nyanga, Zimbabwe’s film industry takes another bold step onto the regional stage, celebrating its rich storytelling tradition and creative talent.
