Harare Wetlands Trust Demands Urgent Action to Address Lake Chivero Contamination or Face Legal Action

The Harare Wetlands Trust (HWT), a group advocating for environmental and water rights, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the City of Harare, the Environmental Management Agency (EMA), and the Upper Manyame Sub-Catchment Council (UMSCC). The group demands immediate action to address the severe contamination of Lake Chivero, warning that failure to act will result in legal action.

This call comes after the tragic deaths of several animals, including rhinos, zebras, and wildebeests, due to cyanobacteria poisoning in the lake. HWT claims that the ongoing discharge of raw sewage into Lake Chivero by the City of Harare has created a toxic environment, putting both wildlife and human health at significant risk.

In formal letters sent to the authorities, HWT pointed out the constitutional rights of citizens to live in a safe and healthy environment. The group emphasized the dangerous health consequences of consuming contaminated water and fish from the lake, calling on the relevant bodies to take urgent steps toward decontaminating the water and halting the discharge of sewage into the lake.

HWT has warned that if the authorities fail to meet their demands within the stipulated 48-hour period, they will pursue legal action. The group’s response highlights the growing concern over environmental degradation in Zimbabwe and the potential harm to both ecosystems and public health.
