9 Zimbabweans Charged After Killing Man by Stomping on His Testicles in Botswana

In a shocking case that has sent shockwaves across the region, nine Zimbabwean nationals have been formally charged with murder and illegal entry into Botswana following the gruesome killing of fellow countryman Tavonanashe Mariga. The accused allegedly subjected Mariga to a merciless assault, stomping on his testicles until he lost consciousness, leading to his death.

The accused—Crispen Gasura (33), Desmond Dube (23), Takesure Fraser (38), Abbisai Gasura (29), Justice Mafukidze (25), Clayton Chiwa (35), Spencer Gasura (35), Calvin Mafukidze (27), and Alouis Gasura (23)—were arraigned before the Broadhurst Magistrates’ Court last Friday.

A Deadly Accusation Over P1,500

The horrific attack took place at Matebele Farms on January 5, 2025, after the suspects accused Mariga of stealing P1,500. Reports indicate that the nine men tied up Mariga, viciously beat him with sticks, and stomped on his groin area while recording the assault on video.

When emergency services arrived, Mariga was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead upon arrival due to the severity of his injuries.

No Bail for the Accused

Prosecutor Mmoloki Selofera opposed bail, arguing that the case was still under investigation. “The accused should not be granted bail as we are still awaiting post-mortem results, forensic evidence, and a photo album of the crime scene,” he stated.

Magistrate Goratile Moremi-Ramakoloi agreed with the prosecution, ordering that the nine men remain in custody until their next court appearance on February 13, 2025.

The case has sparked outrage and debate over mob justice, brutality, and crime involving undocumented migrants in Botswana. As authorities continue their investigation, the accused remain behind bars, facing serious charges that could lead to life imprisonment or the death penalty.
