Outrage over MDC A protest ban.
There is growing consensus amongst MDC A supporters that the ban on their planned protests was unjustified. The party supporters had planned to stage demonstrations in Bulawayo today at 10 am. The police however managed to obtain an interdict restraining anyone from partaking in the protests.
The MDC A have since lodged an appeal against the interdict which has been scheduled for hearing today at 4 pm. The demonstration was supposed to have started at 10 am. All hopes have been thwarted and there is speculation that the appeal is likely to be dismissed just as what happened in Harare.
There is heavy police presence in Bulawayo at the moment with policemen on horseback moving around the city. They are keeping an eye out for any protests and the city seems desserted. The protests in Harare in Friday were crushed by the police who threw teargas and assaulted those who were marching in the Harare CBD area.
Most people have expressed anger at the authorities for disregarding the law in that the Constitution of Zimbabwe allows for freedom of movement and gives rights to demonstrate peacefully. Others have bemoaned the way MDC A activists have been abducted and tortured this week in order to turn the protests.
The protests were organized as a way of speaking out against the current economic crisis in Zimbabwe and the seemingly ignorant stance taken by government. Most people are battling to make ends meet in Zimbabwe.
