Top 20 Most Inspirational Zimbabwean Youth 2018
Every year a new crop of Zimbabweans, who do so much to inspire. They come from different fields such as business to entertainment, to sport. They are working hard and gaining recognition from home and abroad. They have compelling stories of how far they have come and continue to rise. Some influence from behind the scenes whilst others are at the forefront of setting the pace. These Top 20 under 35 who are inspiring other young people in and out of Zimbabwe. - Madam Boss
Comedian, actress and singer Tyra Chikocho better known as Madam Boss is the ultimate started from the bottom story. She has never been ashamed to share her humble beginnings including the fact that she was a maid. The role of the maid Dudzai as shown in her skits propelled her career as one of Zimbabwe’s funniest women. Madam Boss is now an award winning, world touring entertainer backed by corporate endorsements. At 33, Madam Boss continues to grow her brand whilst rubbing shoulders with big names in entertainment and business. Madam Boss is the Zimbabwean aspiration, it doesn’t matter where you come from, it’s where you are going that counts.
2. George Chigova
Even if you are not a soccer fan, the name George Chigova rings a bell. The Warriors goalkeeper has been known for his excellence at protecting the goal post. He made headlines earlier this year when he singlehandedly pushed the Warriors to a second successive final appearance at the COSAFA competition. To top that he showed team spirit by sharing his $10,000 prize with his team mates. Chigova not only serves the national football team but he plays as a goalkeeper for Premier Soccer League club, Polokwane City.
3. Tatenda Jakarasi and Farai Chikumba
One of the most innovative ideas to come out of Zimbabwe, is the Munch application. Having noticed the gap in the food service delivery in Zimbabwe, founders Tatenda Jakarasi and Farai Chikumba came up with Munch. The application offers efficiency when it comes to ordering and delivering food from restaurants. Both in their late 20s, Tatenda and Farai have managed to become semi-finalist at the Seedstars Africa Summit late last year. They were also nominated for the Best Ecommerce Vendor at the 2018 Social Media Awards. Munch has expanded to Victoria Falls and according to Tatenda Jakarasi, the company plans to expand across the country. Tatenda and Farai are great examples of what thinking outside the box can do no matter the economy.
4. Donel Mangena
Right now, most teenagers would probably want to be in Donel Mangena’s shoes. The 17-year-old UK based Zimbabwean became the pride and joy of the nation, when he appeared on The Voice UK. Under the wings of Will.i.am, Donel managed to come second at the finals of the talent reality show. He was invited by Prince Harry to perform at his Queen Elizabeth II’s 92nd birthday. He released his debut single titled ‘Bang Like a Drum’ which has been doing very well across online streaming sites. He recently performed at the Miss World finals which was viewed by millions of people across the world. Donel’s career is just getting started but he is one of Zimbabwe’s brightest stars to shine on the global stage.
5. George Munengwa
George Munengwa goes by the a.k.a billionaire George and he is sure on his way there. Taking what he learnt as an employee, George is synonymous with air conditioning in Zimbabwe. He is the founder and managing director of ProAir Heating & Air Conditioning. The company is one of the country’s leading air conditioning companies. This has earned George several awards and being listed on Zimbabwe’s influential lists. In 2016, George was listed on the 100 most powerful leaders ‘Under 40’ of 2016. In person George Munengwa is cheerful and his social media is inspirational. George is all about youth empowerment and making billionaires from the younger generation.
